The school trip season is starting! But what should go in the lunch box?
As the end of the school year approaches, it is time to organize class trips and outdoor school programs. In the summer heat, it is especially important that the food packed for the trip is impeccable in terms of food safety. The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) Education Program has collected some simple and practical tips that will help you avoid foodborne illnesses.
Higher temperatures and humidity create an ideal environment for bacteria to grow in food. Therefore, it is extremely important what and how we pack for trips. The primary consideration is to choose more durable foods that do not require refrigeration. Pastries usually do not require refrigeration, but we should make sure that the filling does not spoil quickly. If we pack sandwiches, we should choose dry cold cuts instead of fatty liver and French fries. However, dishes with eggs or mayonnaise should be avoided. When packing your snacks, use paper or canvas bags to help wick away moisture. Non-perishable snack options such as muesli bars, oat bars or seeds are a safe and filling option.
If you pack your food the night before the trip, be sure to put it in the refrigerator overnight. In addition to food safety, preventing food waste is also an important consideration when preparing for class trips. When putting together the menu, prioritize varied, seasonal ingredients and pack smaller portions. It is also worth talking to your children about the value of food and our shared responsibility to consume it not only safely but also without waste.
