The Christmas onslaught on the toy market is starting
The busiest period of the domestic game market begins: half of the annual turnover is realized in the weeks before Christmas. The rise of digitization is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the number of online orders increased fivefold already in November, while customers expect fast delivery and wallet-friendly pick-up options. Board games lead the popularity list again this year, followed by LEGO, creative and developmental toys, and vehicles. Parents today are not only looking for fun and skill-building toys, but also prioritize sustainability and interactive features.
The strongest period of the toy market begins in mid-November, when almost half of the annual turnover is realized according to data from REGIO JÁTÉK. “Our expected average basket value online during the holiday season is HUF 16,000, while in stores it is around HUF 12,000, which is roughly the same as last year’s data. The turnover of our online store already jumps fivefold in November compared to an average month, while the real rush in our stores starts after Santa Claus; in December, we serve 4-4.5 times more customers than in other periods of the year,” said Dávid Gyaraki, deputy managing director of REGIO JÁTÉK.
According to recent research by the toy retailer, a significant number of customers prepare for Christmas with financial awareness, as every second family spends more than HUF 75,000, two-thirds of which are gifts. Most people spend HUF 10-15 thousand (28%) on a surprise this year, while a quarter of those surveyed were looking for a gift of over HUF 20 thousand.
Cooperative and family cooperatives are alive and well
REGIO JÁTÉK’s forecast coincides with the results of the survey: again this year, board games, LEGO, creative, developmental toys and vehicles are the most popular gifts.
“The places on the podium have been occupied for years, although they have changed places, one thing is for sure that the companies will finish at the top this year as well. Currently, most people are looking for cooperative games that require teamwork, common strategy and communication, as well as family games that bring together several generations. In addition, the vehicle category has also gained renewed strength, where safe, durable pieces designed for small hands are available even for the smallest children.
