The domestic melon season is starting – Lidl expects a huge increase in exports
Starting today, Lidl Hungary’s warehouses will only receive watermelons from Hungarian suppliers, which will soon arrive in the stores as well.
This marks the start of the domestic watermelon season at the market-leading supermarket chain. As a result of the company’s strategic endeavor to support the strengthening of the market position of Hungarian watermelons, it sold more than 9,200 tons of the fruit domestically last year, and together with exports contributed almost 2.5 billion forints to the success of the producers. The department store chain is expecting a significant growth of 100% only in the case of exports this year.
Hungarian producers have started harvesting free-range watermelons, so from today only Hungarian fruits will arrive at Lidl Hungary’s logistics centers. Customers will find seeded watermelons in stores first, and then, depending on the ripening process, they will be able to choose between seedless and yellow watermelons.
