Fragrant Mátra
The nicest wines from the Mátra wine region are among the most fragrant in Hungary. Due to its ecological characteristics, grapes harvested in the region have a high sugar content. From these fragrant, spicy and harmonic wines are made, which have good acidity and high alcohol content. Italian Riesling is the dominant grape variety, but experts say the local Muscat Ottonel is the best in the country. Müller-Thurgau, Leányka, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Linden Leaf varieties are also cultivated in the region. Mátra Wine Community believes that their products will make it abroad as well: Canadians are really into Muscat Ottonel and Irsai Olivér, Germans like Gewürztraminer, while Italians prefer Pinot Gris. The upward trend of fresh, crisp wines seems to support the cause of nice and friendly Mátra wines.
