This is how PENNY reacts to the energy crisis!
Saving is a well-known aspect at PENNY, and not only in relation to the favorable prices of the products offered to customers! In the current economic situation, it is particularly important that the shops of the retail chain are also able to reserve and allocate the available energy. PENNY stores support sustainability and optimization of energy use with, among other things, solar panels, electric car chargers, and other green solutions.
The REWE group, which also owns PENNY’s Hungarian subsidiary, has a firm climate strategy plan. According to this, it will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by thirty percent by 2030, and it has set itself the goal of achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2040. In August, the National Trade Association made several recommendations on how commercial enterprises should reduce their operating costs in order to curb the rate of price increases. Accepting the listed energy-saving suggestions, as well as fulfilling its own commitments, PENNY has installed glass doors on wall-mounted refrigerators in more than a hundred stores so far, ahead of many of its competitors. The number of these will increase by 43 units by the end of the year, and the modernization will be extended to 24 more stores in 2023. With this, shops can save roughly 10 percent of their total energy consumption. In addition, LED lighting is used in all units of PENNY, which are completely switched off after closing time. With the help of intelligent building management software, the temperature also adapts to the conditions outside the building.
The company is also a leader in the field of renewable energy sources, so the power supply is also provided with the help of alternative solutions
The store chain’s developments look to the future: electric car charging stations are already available for PENNY customers in the parking lots of 66 stores, and the company will hand over seven more units in the near future. With this technology, since January 2019, discounters have already protected our environment from more than 2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide and about 12 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions. – So far, we have already installed solar collectors on thirty of our buildings and one of our logistics centers over the past years, which produce 20 percent of the energy used in the stores. Our department store chain currently wants to expand the project with 13 new locations and a logistics center. The main effect of our developments is that we can keep our prices consistently lower, the difference can be felt even compared to other discount chains. This is therefore not only important for us, but also for hundreds of thousands of families who can always count on us, said Eszter Kazatsay, head of communications at PENNY.
