This is how domestic chains fight against food waste
For many customers, it is still not clear how much Hungarian supermarket chains do to reduce food waste. HelloVidék journalists investigated how store chains fight food waste.
SPAR, Tesco and Aldi are also trying to minimize food waste with various initiatives. SPAR, for example, offers significant discounts on products that are close to expiration in the framework of leftover-saving collaborations. A similar strategy is followed by Tesco, which also lowers the price of soon-to-expire food so that it can be sold more quickly.
Aldi uses an innovative solution known as “Catch of the day”. This measure offers the previous day’s leftover baked goods at half price, bagged to sell by noon the next day.
Donations also play an important role in food rescue initiatives. Supermarket chains often offer unsalable but still edible products to charities, thus reducing the amount of waste.
Activities carried out by supermarket chains contribute significantly to the reduction of food waste, while drawing consumers’ attention to the importance of sustainable consumption.
