Hungarians are spending less money on travel this year
Pénzcentrum conducted its annual Great Travel Survey again this year, to which more than 11,000 readers responded. The research highlighted that recreation and relaxation are important to Hungarians, but many cannot afford to travel due to the increased prices. More than 70% of the respondents indicated that they will choose cheaper destinations, travel less often, or do not plan to travel at all in 2024.
The research showed that a significant part of the Hungarian population is forced to change their travel habits due to financial constraints. The services of travel agencies are mostly used by the older age group, while younger people prefer individually organized trips. Even within this, members of the 25-40 age group are the ones who most actively plan their own vacations, while the over 64 age group typically uses the services of travel agencies.
The majority of Hungarians are spending significantly less on travel this year: nearly 29% of those filling in reported that they can spend less than HUF 100,000 on vacation. This ratio shows a significant increase compared to last year. The proportion of respondents in the middle and high-end spending categories (above HUF 100,000) is decreasing, which suggests that more expensive travel options are less and less accessible to the Hungarian population.
According to the results of the research, the majority of Hungarians travel by car, which proves to be the most practical solution, especially for families. The plane is the second most popular means of transport, especially among the citizens of the capital, who choose this mode in the largest proportion. The bus and the train are less popular and are usually chosen by the less affluent and the younger age group.
