The Agro-ecological Program (AÖP), which is popular among Hungarian farmers and operates within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), will offer farmers several commitments in 2026, for the fulfillment of which the use of appropriate products is essential.

The CAP National Managing Authority’s Communication No. 8/2026 informs those concerned about the renewed, current lists of products approved for each practice. The communication from the managing authority states which products can and cannot be used within the framework of the AÖP when fulfilling each commitment. One of the important changes in 2026 is that the list of previously available soil and plant conditioning agents and nitrogen fixing products has been expanded to include green compost products, thus supporting sustainable soil management. The National Managing Authority draws attention to the fact that during participation in the AÖP – within the framework of some specific practices – only the products on the published lists may be used, and the fulfillment of the commitments does not exempt from compliance with other legal obligations.

In order to further reduce the administrative and practical burdens of farmers, a new simplification has been introduced in the AÖP

A maximum deviation of 3% is acceptable when fulfilling the committed quantities and ratios, which does not constitute non-compliance. This flexibility provides security for producers, especially in situations that are more difficult to plan for due to weather, technology or market reasons, while not jeopardizing the environmental objectives of the program. The AÖP is a voluntary support system in which farmers receive additional support if they apply more environmentally friendly, nature-friendly practices in their everyday farming. Within the framework of the program, producers applied for support for approximately 4.3 million hectares of the country’s 5 million hectares of agricultural land last year. Last year, the ministry helped farmers participating in the AÖP with a number of simplifications: sanctions were significantly reduced, and the obligation to keep an electronic farming log was previously eliminated. Also last year, the Ministry of Agriculture created the possibility of autumn advance payments for the AÖP, within the framework of which a total of approximately 28 billion forints was paid to nearly 30 thousand farmers.
