Easter shopping: demand may increase, in addition to ham, pistachio chocolate rabbits are also coming
Easter could bring strong sales in retail this year – according to Auchan, not only the festive atmosphere, but also the margin cap could stimulate the desire to buy. Classic ham, eggs and chocolate bunnies are still hit products, but consumers are increasingly consciously looking for more special flavors and free alternatives.
Easter is the second strongest season in retail after Christmas, and although spending is 30% less than in December, we spend the same amount more than on an average large shopping trip – said Attila Nagy, Sales Director of Auchan Hungary. Experts do not expect the margin cap to reduce demand this year, and in fact, they expect an increase in volume, since the majority of the 30 affected product categories are classic Easter products.
Scheduled holiday rush
Easter falls at an optimal time, the third weekend of April, so it could be the busiest weekend of the month. Customers start preparing weeks in advance – decorative items, drinks and non-perishable food items are already in the spotlight in stores at the end of March, but the biggest rush is expected in the week before the holiday, when demand for fresh goods increases.
We want classic ham – but better ones
Easter ham is still a must-have. Auchan offers around 60 products, from quick-cured to traditionally aged, smoked meats that can be eaten immediately. The selection includes ribs, knuckles, shoulders, sides and turkey ham. Prices start from 1690 HUF/kg and range up to 5990 HUF/kg. According to experience, 70–80% of customers still stick to classic ham, but demand for sausages, cracklings and bacon is also increasing significantly.
