The shadowy side of the Dutch dairy industry
The Netherlands has one of the most successful dairy industry in the global market, but according to The Guardian, the size of the Dutch livestock is so large that the farmers can not get rid of the dung safely. The problem is literally very stinky, but it has serious environmental and economic implications as well.
Not only the methane released from cattle and sheep is a concern for environmental and climate protection aspect. The Dutch cows produce so much manure that they can not even use in agriculture, and this can mean serious environmental pollution. The nation’s 1.8 million cows are producing so much manure that there isn’t enough space to get rid of it safely. (origo)
