Cheaper products boosting sales for Sainsbury. Sales of the third largest British retail chain were up by 8,4 percent (5,3 percent without fuel) in the second quarter ending on 4. October. Expansion was partly the result of a wider assortment of cheaper products.

McDonald’s achieving spectacular growth in Romania. Revenues of the fast food chain were up by 30 percent in the first nine months of 2008, compared to the same period in 2007, which is 10 percent more than planned. McDonald’s Romania expects total revenues to exceed USD 130 million by the end of 2008.

Aldi adding travel services to its assortment. Accommodation at favourable rates and one week seaside holidays are advertised in the October catalogue of the discount chain. Holidays on cruise ships and 14 day round the world trips will also be included in the offer soon.

Economic heat insulation by Tesco in the UK. According to an offer by Tesco, walls and the roof of homes can be insulated for only GBP 199. A total of 50 homes have been insulated by Tesco during the summer and they hope to fit half a million homes with heat insulation in the next three years.

Ikea remains the strongest Swedish brand. According to the latest survey conducted by GfK market research, the international furniture chain is the strongest brand in Sweden. The furniture retail chain finished on top of the Superbrands list for the first time in 2004.

HUF 3,5 billion Electrolux project in Hungary. The production of refrigerators in Italy was reorganised by the Electrolux group at the end of May. As a result, most of the production capacity of the Scandicci plant and part of the production capacity of the Susegana plant is to be relocated to Hungary. Workforce is to be increased by 200, of which 70 will be employed in Nyíregyháza, and 130 in Jászberény.
