Onions may soon be in short supply
In almost all European countries, onions are significantly more expensive, and it seems that the sky is the limit for prices, yet common sense suggests that there will be a limit where the market will already react with a drastic drop in demand, especially since onions in Europe are much less part of the daily diet than in Asia. But where will this border be? – asks fruitveb.hu.
On the vegetable markets of the world, one of the most frequently discussed topics is the onion shortage. Very little was produced in the countries that are the most important suppliers of world trade, so much so that several of these countries have introduced export bans. This mainly applies to Inner Asian countries such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, but Tajikistan and Azerbaijan also face the same problem. Further east, the situation is no better: an export duty of 180% was introduced in Pakistan, and the weather in New Zealand was so bad that no significant quantity is expected from there this winter either.
