A shortage may develop on the cabbage market, and the price of the vegetable may continue to rise
According to FruitVeb’s analysis, the cabbage market is threatened by a shortage, and even the expected imports will not significantly reduce the current record prices, as there is an extremely short supply of high-quality goods on the market. In Poland, which produced the smallest cabbage crop in the last ten years, prices remain at a record high of 1.10-1.50 PLN/kg (105-140 HUF/kg), and for high-quality products they are even higher, at 1.3 A price of PLN 1.5/kg (120–140 HUF/kg) must be paid, Pénzcentrum points out.
Due to the high prices, the flow of German imports to Poland has already begun, but the items coming from Germany are for the time being only available locally in limited quantities. Imports are expected to increase, but according to FruitVeb, a further drop in prices is unlikely before the New Year, and in fact, an increase in prices can be expected.
The impact of the Polish cabbage shortage also extends to the Hungarian market, as a significant part of the imported cabbage comes from Poland and Germany. According to KSH data, Hungarian cabbage prices took a turn in August, and by September they were already 9% higher than in the same month last year. The new increase in price may affect consumers especially sensitively before the holidays, as the raw material of stuffed cabbage is an indispensable part of Christmas menus.
Due to the current situation, it is advisable to purchase raw materials in advance to avoid further price increases before the holiday season.
