The minister explained at the event that Hungary is proud to have been in Paris 100 years ago as one of the 8 countries that founded the International Organization of Viticulture and Wine (OIV). We wish to continue this common work, which has now developed into a global one, based on Hungarian traditions and expertise. The OIV plays a prominent role in overcoming the current challenges of the grape and wine sector. The Strategic Plan for the period 2025-2029, which is about to be adopted, can create a good basis for this task, he added. István Nagy noted that in traditional wine-producing countries, including in our country, grape growing, wine production and wine consumption are an important part of the country’s culture and national heritage. The head of the ministry also touched on the fact that we have all experienced the negative effects of extreme weather over the past 3-4 years: extreme dryness, high temperatures, sudden large amounts of precipitation, and spring frosts. Therefore, within the framework of adapting to climate change, research and development activities and their support must be increased. The goal is to introduce new varieties and rootstock varieties into cultivation, to reduce the use of chemicals in order to better adapt to weather extremes, the minister emphasized.
