Five out of six families will not miss the festive fish this year either
Despite the 35-40 percent increase in the price of fish products, 84 percent of Hungarian families will not be missing fish from their festive table this year, according to a recent survey by Agroinform.hu. Among those who eat fish on the eve of Christmas, 85 percent process carp, but almost a third of them also buy catfish to prepare the festive menu.
It is still a living tradition among families that fish is put on the table at the dinner eaten on December 24. Agroinform’s mid-December survey shows that 67 percent of respondents eat fish as the main element of dinner – 20 percent do not even eat meat at that time – and another 17 percent included some kind of fish dish among other dishes.
By far the most popular fish at this time is carp: 85 percent of the respondents buy this fish for Christmas, but 32 percent also use catfish for the Christmas menu. African catfish is also relatively salable at this time (13%), and busa and salmon also sell well (11-11%). In 81 percent of cases, fish juice is made from the purchased fish, but fried fish is also very popular (65%). 15 percent of families eat grilled or grilled fish at Christmas.
Fish products were also not left out of the general rise in the price of food: the price of a kilo of live carp rose by 35-40 percent in one year: instead of HUF 1,450 last year, traders are asking for around HUF 2,000 this year. Sliced carp for less than HUF 4,000 can only be obtained in a lucky case during this year’s Advent period. African catfish fillets range from HUF 4,000 to HUF 4,500, and the price of a kilo of sliced or filleted gray catfish is now well over HUF 8,000.
