Thanks to the autumn works carried out in a timely manner, the sunflower harvest was completed by the first week of October, and the corn harvest is also nearing its end. The storage capacity for the storage of the crop is ensured – informed Zsolt Feldman.

The Secretary of State responsible for agriculture and rural development of the Ministry of Agriculture also explained that this year’s drought caused the greatest damage to corn, but also affected other plant species. Yields per hectare decreased accordingly compared to previous periods.

According to the data of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK), the sunflower harvest was completed at the earliest

The popularity of sunflower remains strong, this year’s area of 680,000 hectares exceeds last year’s figure and the average of the last five years. This culture was also affected by the summer drought, but the damage was less than that of corn. The national yield was 2.5 t/ha, which is 13 percent lower than last year’s value and 4.9 percent below the average of the last five years. There are significant differences between the individual counties, and the yields per hectare vary widely (from 1.8 t/ha to 3 t/ha). Similar to corn, the Transdanubian counties typically produced more favorable yields, while the counties of the Southern Great Plain and Central Hungary produced weaker yields. The total sunflower crop exceeds 1.7 million tons, which – despite the unfavorable weather this year – slightly exceeds the average of the last five years.

Maize has already been harvested from four-fifths of the area, the national average yield in this year’s area of 874,000 hectares is around 5.6 t/ha so far

The summer drought affected corn the best, and as a result, this year’s crop average is significantly lower than last year’s and the last five years’ crop averages. The most favorable averages – around 7.5 t/ha – were reported from the Western Transdanubian counties, and the lowest – around 3.5-4 t/ha – from the Southern Great Plain and Pest counties. Based on the yields per hectare and the area, a total corn harvest of 4.9 million tons is likely this year.

It is good news that this year the 112,000 hectares of soybean production area has essentially doubled compared to last year’s area and compared to the average of the last five years

As with other fall-harvested field crops, soybeans are also showing the adverse effect of the summer drought, the national average yield of 2.3 t/ha is below the average yield data of last year and the last five years. At the same time, thanks to the increase in the harvested area, this year’s total soybean yield is almost 50 percent higher than last year, and 60 percent higher than the average yield of the last five years. The role of soy in the crop rotation has increased significantly, which can provide serious help in reducing the domestic protein feed deficit.
