The first local Food Bank in Hungary was established in Hajdú-Bihar county
The Hungarian Food Banking Association has been operating in Hungary for 13 years. In 2018 a new chapter has begun in the life of the Association: on 8 November, the first local Food Bank starts to operate under the Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Élelmiszerbank (Hajdú-Bihar County Food Bank) name. The aim of the first local Food Bank is to help the needy of Hajdú-Bihar County with more efficient food supplies.
Every year 1.8 million tons of food products are lost in Hungary. The Food Bank aims to establish a link between accumulating food surpluses and those in need, thereby helping to reduce starvation and food waste in Hungary.
