The inspectors of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) conducted inspections in meat plants producing gyro skewers and gyro skewers. Due to the deficiencies found during the inspections that posed a serious food safety risk, the experts suspended the operation of a Budapest factory producing gyro skewers with immediate effect. They also prohibited work in a poultry meat cutting plant in Pest County that also produces gyro skewers and gyro skewers. The authority also immediately withdrew a total of approximately 8,500 kg of food from circulation at the affected locations and ordered its official seizure. The procedures concerning the inspected companies and the imposition of fines are in progress.

Nébih experts uncovered several serious food hygiene deficiencies during the inspection of a meat factory in Budapest – which produces raw materials for gyro skewers. Several of the building’s doors opening to the outside were not equipped with insect screens, and not all of them closed without gaps. The floors, walls and ceilings in the factory premises were in poor condition, dirty, the covering was damaged and cracked in many places, and their paint was peeling. There were dried and sometimes moldy pieces of meat on the walls and doors in several places. There were cigarette butts and insect carcasses on the factory floor, and the crate washing equipment was contaminated with rodent droppings.

Based on the documents presented, the last pest control was carried out almost a year ago. Dirt had accumulated under the perforated plastic sheet of one of the work tables. The sink was also dirty, and there was no detergent or cleaning agent. A hot water instrument disinfectant was installed in only one place in the unit, but it was not used either. The device was not filled with water, the knife holder grate was missing, and its water area was contaminated. Thus, the facility did not have a functioning instrument disinfectant.

The conditions for hygienic hand washing were not ensured anywhere in the plant. The metal parts of the magnetic instrument holders mounted on the wall were corroded. In several cases, raw materials and finished products were stored on the floor without using a tray. The unit did not have a room for storing animal by-products either. The freezing activity was not documented in the plant. In the forecourt of the processing room, pre-cooled chicken leg fillets, which were actually frozen, were being thawed in trays placed on the floor without a tray when the inspectors arrived.

The Nébih suspended the plant’s operations with immediate effect due to the circumstances posing a serious food safety risk. The authority immediately withdrew 10 items, a total of 2,691.5 kg of untraceable food from circulation, and prohibited their placing on the market and use, and at the same time ordered their official closure. The facility could only resume operations after the violations were eliminated and after a repeated official inspection.

Nébih experts also conducted a two-day inspection at another factory in Pest County that produces poultry meat, gyro skewers, and gyro skewers. The authority immediately prohibited employees from working, as none of the employees had a valid health book, and the production and freezing documentation required by law was not up to date. Here too, the activity could only continue in compliance with the law.

During the inspection, the inspectors also ordered the withdrawal from circulation of 47 items, 5805.4 kg of expired and untraceable food items, and the immediate prohibition and seizure of their placing on the market and use.

During the inspections, measures were taken in relation to all infringing products. The procedures affecting the companies and the imposition of fines are in progress.

The data of the affected companies are available at Some on the list of violations of the Nébih law.
