GVH: The expansion of the online Price Monitor is another help for Hungarian families
The online Price Monitoring system operated by the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) can help to keep food prices under control by stimulating the market. The GVH cooperates with the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) on the expansion of product categories, taking into account consumer signals received in the past period. In addition, the national competition authority monitors market developments in individual product chains and, if justified, intervenes and takes the necessary measures.
Hungarian consumers can save money and time by using the online Price Monitoring system. Currently, consumers can follow the daily updated prices of more than 2,000 different food products in 78 product categories, in approximately 1,200 stores of six large retail chains nationwide in the system available at www.arfigyelo.gvh.hu.
The operational experience of the online Price Monitoring system so far supports the rationale for further product category expansion. In the first half of 2024, the most searched items in the system were typically meat, chicken breast and pork leg, while in the second half of last year, milk, dairy products and eggs were the focus of consumer searches.
Experts from the GVH and the Ministry of National Economy have been in discussions in recent days in order to determine the new product categories to be included in the system as soon as possible. Experts from the national competition authority are also examining which product categories can have the greatest impact on price comparability and the market-stimulating effect of the online Price Monitor.
The GVH is continuously monitoring market developments. In this regard, Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the GVH, said:
“When necessary, the GVH intervened in order to curb profit-driven inflation. We are constantly monitoring market developments and are ready to take steps to protect Hungarian families.”
