Mushroom growers inspected by Nébih
Mushroom growers were inspected by experts from the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) at the beginning of the year. The cold weather does not allow outdoor crop production, but work does not stop in heated growing facilities even then. The Hungarian mushroom growing sector operates properly from a food safety perspective, with the exception of a few minor shortcomings. Domestically grown mushrooms are safe.

In general, mushroom growing requires precise compliance with hygiene rules for both food safety and crop safety reasons. During the inspections, both large companies supplying to supermarkets and smaller companies selling through wholesale markets were also examined. The inspections covered the existence of notifications and registrations related to the activity, the maintenance of records and documentation related to cultivation, the traceability of the product, and compliance with distribution regulations. The inspectors inspected the food safety conditions of production, storage, packaging, transportation, and marketing.
Special attention was paid to the working conditions and hygiene of the employees.
The hygiene suitability of the employees is of critical importance, in connection with which a warning was required on one occasion due to neglecting the mandatory annual job suitability test. The equipment of the restrooms also showed appropriate hygiene practices. This was ensured at all producers, which includes running hot water, soap, and hygienic hand drying. There were also signs and illustrations warning about hand washing. Overall, it can be stated that the domestic mushroom production sector operates properly from a food safety perspective, with the exception of a few minor deficiencies. Deficiencies were primarily related to the lack of notifications related to the activity, which were corrected upon request by the inspectors. The mushrooms produced by domestic growers can be safely consumed by everyone. Nébih recommends that as buyers, we look for Hungarian-grown mushrooms, so we can get a quality product that is controlled by the authorities and we also help the producers.
