Károly Gerendai: ‘I like to create, make plans and build’
Károly Gerendai told Szilvia Krizsó in the latest episode of the Future Talks podcast series that he had to do crisis management with his restaurants and other enterprises during the pandemic period. He said it was an interesting task for him and it even inspired him, but the lockdown had a negative influence on the founder of the famous Sziget Festival. He is the kind of person who can’t sit around doing nothing, he likes to create, make plans and build.
Opening a restaurant in the middle of recession
Despite the difficult situation and the collapse of tourism and the HoReCa sector, Mr Gerendai and his business partners went ahead with opening two new restaurants, Nudli and Rumour. Rumour is special because its chef is the famous Jenő Rácz, who won a Michelin star in Shanghai. The kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant and guests are sitting around it, watching and listening to the chef while he is cooking.
Costes enters the Chinese market
Meanwhile Hungary’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, Costes was invited to open a new Costes on the artificial archipelago Ocean Flower in China. Costes will be one of the 150 restaurants coming from all over the world. Ms Krizsó and Mr Gerendai also discussed whether high end gastronomy is snobbery or not, the traps of social media and technological innovation and the related conspiracy theories.
