Weird rules now apply to e-cigarettes
As of July 1st, new legislation came into effect in Australia, which significantly changes the distribution and purchase of disposable electronic cigarettes (vapes). According to the new rules, these products are now only available in pharmacies.
The law requires customers to consult their GP or pharmacist before purchasing a vape. According to the new regulations, people under the age of 18 can only buy e-cigarettes with a doctor’s prescription, although this restriction will only remain in effect until October 1. The ruling Australian Labor Party had originally planned even tighter restrictions that would have made it mandatory for everyone to buy e-cigarettes with a prescription. However, the opposition Australian Greens opposed the proposal, saying the measures would put too much strain on the health system and limit the options for those who want to quit smoking.
The new legislation applies not only to distribution, but also to the composition of vape products. Reducing the nicotine concentration and limiting the available flavors are also part of the measures. The Sydney resident, quoted by Reuters, said the October changes would make the new rules meaningless and increase the risk of consumers buying e-cigarettes from the black market, the Internet or other unregulated sources.
