The apple market may be on the verge of a global recovery, the increase in demand would benefit Hungarian producers as well – read a summary published on Wednesday on the website of the FruitVeb Hungarian Vegetable and Fruit Trade Organization and Product Council.

According to experts, the growth of apple turnover can be stimulated by several market conditions at the same time, some of which currently appear to be permanent. 5 years ago, production was still unprofitable, as a result more and more people gave up farming, and due to the increase in energy costs, processing also generated less income.

At the same time, apple puree is the cheapest ingredient in fruit juice drinks, which are becoming more and more popular worldwide

The market for apple juice is expanding particularly rapidly in countries with increasing population in Southeast Asia and Africa, but due to the increase in the urban population, it is also growing globally, as fewer and fewer people have gardens suitable for growing fruit trees. The demand is also increased by the fact that this year the orange crop will in all probability fall, and last year the negative peak was reached by the apple crop in China, they wrote.

Other countries in the region may also benefit from the price increase

Poland, Moldova and Ukraine, among others, can only sell a significant part of their apple crop to processors, just like domestic producers. At the same time, the rise in the price of industrial apples can slow down the transition to better quality, and if demand falls again, it can generate losses again. The experts would therefore consider it best if the market processes led to the separation of the production of industrial and fresh market apples, as has already happened with other fruits, in the long term this would be the most sustainable, they added.

According to FruitVeb’s previous announcement, Hungary can expect a good apple harvest this year based on July surveys

The more severe spring frosts spared the north-eastern part of the country, where the majority of the production areas are located. Pollination was not significantly affected by the cold and heavy rainfall, and the weather has been especially favorable since May, except for more significant than average storm and ice damage. In Hungary, apples are produced on almost 20,000 hectares this year, the yield potential would be 600-650,000 tons, but due to weather damage, fewer apples usually ripen, and the fluctuation of the quantity has been especially significant in recent years. Of the estimated 500-550 thousand tons of harvest, 400-430 thousand tons can be industrial apples. At the turn of the millennium, the domestic production area exceeded 40,000 hectares, and the yield reached 1 million tons.
