Gold chains
In July, American trade magazine Restaurant & Institutions published its list of the world’s 400 restaurant chains (both fast food and traditional) with the biggest turnover. The first 15 places are occupied by the same restaurants as last year. The turnover of the Top 400 increased by 7 percent – USD 312 billion! – in one year. Number one as always is McDonald’s, both in terms of turnover (USD 70.7 billion) and the number of units (nearly 32,000 units), generating a USD 2.4 million per unit. The runners up are Burger King, Starbucks, Subway (the 2nd biggest chain with more than 30,000 units), Pizza Hut, Wendy’s and Taco Bell.
Hungarian news
On 22 June, a new unit of the Pizza Pont franchise opened in the Buadörs Auchan. The 11th Coffeeshop Company café opened in Eger. In the first quarter the turnover of Hungarian McDonald’s restaurants fell by nearly 5 percent.
New winds, new fires
The image of Burger King is changing – though only gradually – and only in the US. The new BK design carrying the “home of the whopper” slogan was presented in a new unit located in Houston. Interior design of BK units is intended to reflect an energetic and cheerful image. Touch screens for speeding up ordering, free Wi-Fi, energy saving new grill ovens and interactive children’s corners will be standard features in the new units.
