Important deadline in the SZÉP card case
The government decree draws the attention of SZÉP card users to new changes and important deadlines, based on which banks may charge a fee for unspent benefits. However, due to the protracted pandemic situation and possible unused funds, the government is now taking additional measures for the benefit of customers.
According to the current rules, the benefits on SZÉP card accounts topped up after March 20, 2024 can be spent by cardholders until September 20, 2025, without deduction of costs. However, it is important to note that on March 20, banks will deduct a 15 percent fee for amounts loaded but not yet spent between October 16, 2022 and March 20, 2023.
Those who have significant amounts available on their SZÉP card should check the balance in time and use it to avoid fees. According to the government decree, from October 15, 2022 until March 20 or September 20 one year later, service providers will charge a one-time fee of 15 percent for unused balances. The government is therefore also asking the SZÉP card service providers to notify their customers who have at least HUF 50,000 in benefits credited to their accounts before October 15, 2022.
The government’s aim with the measures is to use the discounted funds as quickly and efficiently as possible, as well as to support the economy.
