János Fónagy: food prices continue to fall
Food prices are continuing to fall, and the single-digit inflation forecast by the government for the end of the year can be reached with great certainty – said the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development in Kossuth radio’s Sunday newspaper program.
János Fónagy emphasized: the online price monitoring system, which has been operating for a month, has proven to be extremely effective, the average prices in the monitored 62 product categories have decreased by almost 8 percent.
Speaking about the details, he explained that the price of spaghetti dropped the most in the last month, by about 15 percent, the price of vegetables decreased by more than 14 percent and the price of fruits by 7 percent. The prices of bread, margarine, lard and dairy products decreased by an average of 10 percent in one month. Among the meats, the price of turkey breast decreased the most, by nearly 11 percent, while that of chicken wings by more than 6 percent, the state secretary listed.
As an important change, he mentioned that as of August 1, the food price cap was abolished, the amount of mandatory promotions increased, and cold food can also be bought in stores with a SZÉP card.
