Earth Day: Climate awareness among the Hungarian population is on the rise

April 22 is Earth Day, so the domestic perception of climate change is a particularly topical issue. In a representative population survey of 1,000 people, the GKI and the EU asked the adult population about the impact of climate change on the Hungarian economy. The relevance of the question is provided by, without claiming to be exhaustive, the environmental consequences of global warming, agricultural drought, increasing domestic electricity consumption, and the country’s re-industrialization (battery and electric car factories).

The current effects of climate change are indicated by the fact that, following 2023, 2024 also became the warmest year in the history of our country. The rate of temperature increase is also outstanding, as last year’s average exceeded the previous “first place” value of 2023 (12.2 °C) by 0.7 °C. This was accompanied by another year of low rainfall (16% below the 1991–2020 average, considered the climate norm), which caused a severe drought.

Almost half of the respondents believe that climate change is negatively affecting the Hungarian economy. In contrast, every third person believes that it is not affecting it, and 7% even believe that the change will benefit the country.

Among those who have an opinion (10% is the proportion of those who cannot judge the impact), more men think that climate change has a positive effect or does not affect the Hungarian economy.
