The prices of bread and hamburgers increased mainly
According to recent data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the Hungarian food market has been hit by significant price increases over the past five years. The largest price increases were suffered by white bread, semi-brown bread and hamburgers, the prices of which have risen to record highs since 2019. Among the products included in the inflation basket, these everyday staples have become symbols of price increases, Mfor points out.
In December 2024, the rate of inflation accelerated again, rising from 3.7% in November to 4.6%, although the annual average inflation was 3.7%, significantly down from 17.6% in 2023. Despite the lower inflation, the majority of consumers are still experiencing drastic price increases, especially for basic foodstuffs, which account for a significant part of everyday expenses.
In the past five years, the price of white bread has increased by 200%, that of semi-brown bread by 194%, and that of hamburgers by 200%. Not only bread, but also products such as bread rolls (187% increase) or table salt (177% increase) significantly contribute to the increase in household expenses.
Although according to the Central Statistical Office, the annual inflation figure for 2024 is lower than those experienced in the years before the pandemic, the increase in food prices is strongly felt during everyday purchases. According to people’s perception, basic products such as bread are no longer only expensive, but their availability can also be a challenge for those on lower incomes.
