Munch organized a press event titled “Why is food saving cool?”, which focused on the publication “Hungarian Food Waste Overview” prepared by the company. In addition, two roundtable discussions examined the relationship between Hungarian consumers and sustainability and the efforts of the largest domestic food chains to combat food waste. The event, held at the Tejmadár store in Etele Plaza, was concluded with a sustainability workshop coordinated by the Meska craft marketplace.
Hungarian Food Waste Overview Hungary’s only food saving platform has prepared the publication “Hungarian Food Waste Overview”, which is a gap-filling knowledge repository that presents the current situation of food waste in Europe and Hungary. The overview shows that while Hungary throws away less food per capita than the European average per year, unfortunately, according to the latest research, the previous downward trend was reversed last year and we will throw away more food in 2023 than in previous years – and this will generally increase even more during the Christmas period. The special feature of the overview is that in addition to the data for the European Union and Hungary that are available to anyone, Munch also presents its own calculations that have not been published before.

Meska, the sustainable craft marketplace At the end of the event, interested parties could participate in a creative workshop courtesy of the Meska craft marketplace, where they made an environmentally friendly Christmas star decoration from twigs. In addition to being extremely sturdy and durable, the material is also fully compostable, making it a long-lasting alternative to plastic decorative items.
Meska, Hungary’s largest craft marketplace, recently conducted a survey among Hungarian users, according to which nearly 80% of people are buying personalized gifts this Christmas, a significant portion of which are handmade surprises. The research also revealed that roughly 49% of people are buying them in the month leading up to Christmas, with one of the busiest days being the last Friday in October, Black Friday, while 11% are leaving their shopping until the week or two before Christmas. Following previous trends, online shopping is becoming increasingly popular – currently, more than 90% say they use online services when buying gifts.
