Edeka Wins German Sustainability Award
German food retailer Edeka has received the German Sustainability Award in the “Food Retail” category. The jury praised Edeka’s environmental efforts, highlighting its commitment to freshwater protection and the expansion of its organic product range.
The award is presented by the German Sustainability Award Foundation in cooperation with the federal government, the Council for Sustainable Development, and other partners, Lebensmittelpraxis reports.
Since 2009, Edeka has been working with WWF to make its supply chains more sustainable. One result is the environmentally and socially responsible cultivation of conventional bananas in four producer countries. Edeka has been offering these bananas also in the entry-level price segment since 2025.
Edeka continues to expand its plant-based offerings, collaborates with all major German organic farming associations, and has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% across its operations and supply chain by 2045.
The award ceremony will take place on December 5 in Düsseldorf as part of a two-day congress. The German Sustainability Award is the largest of its kind in Europe, attracting over 800 applications annually and welcoming around 2,000 guests.
