Several thousand pigs ready for slaughter are “stuck” in areas under restrictions due to FMD. In order to help pig farmers and manage market disruptions during the sale of healthy slaughter pig stocks, the Government’s Decree No. 82/2025 on special livestock sector measures was published on April 17.

The decree focuses on two areas: the observation (surveillance) zone and the areas subject to additional restrictions

These are designated in an EU decision. Pig farmers in the two regions are subject to different official measures and restrictions, and therefore the state support provided to them is also different. Élbc non-profit Kft., owned by Nébih, will purchase the animals from the pig farmers in the observation (surveillance) zones set up within a 10 km radius around the outbreaks. The purchase, collection and systematization of the requests will be carried out with the assistance of the Hungarian Pig Breeders and Pig Farmers Association. The areas currently subject to further restrictions include the area of Győr-Moson Sopron County (outside the observation zone), the Esztergom, Komáromi and Tata districts of Komárom-Esztergom County, the Pápai district of Veszprém County, and ten settlements in Vas County (Csánig, Csönge, Kemenesmagasi, Kemenessömjén, Kenyeri, Nick, Pápoc, Répcelak, Szergény, Vönöck). The slaughterhouses purchase and sell slaughter pigs from the pig farmers operating here in a manner consistent with normal circumstances. The Government provides them with the following assistance: if the net market value of the slaughter pigs during the sale does not reach the domestic producer price calculated by the Hungarian Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI) for the given period, the owner can claim compensation of a maximum of 40 percent.
