A reduction in the VAT on food was suggested as a solution
According to Lajos Korózs, the vice president of the MSZP, the general sales tax (VAT) on basic foodstuffs should be reduced to zero percent. Meanwhile, Jobbik also proposed the reduction of VAT on basic foodstuffs and childcare articles.
Lajos Korózs announced at an event broadcast on the MSZP’s Facebook page that according to the latest data from the Central Statistics Office (KSH), the inflation rate based on the pensioner consumer basket was 26.5 percent, and the inflation rate for the population as a whole was 24.5 percent in December.
Among other things, the vice president of the MSZP suggested that the government reduce the VAT on basic foodstuffs to zero percent and that of household energy to five percent. According to him, the government should at least support agricultural enterprises and food industry companies to the same extent as it does with the automobile industry.
On Friday, Dániel Z. Kárpát, the vice-chairman of Jobbik, proposed the introduction of a tax moratorium to the government. According to him, the extra tax revenues coming in due to the crisis should not be collected, but should be returned to the families. He made a proposal to “zero” the VAT on basic food and childcare items, to reduce the VAT on utility bills, and to start a state-backed rental housing program.
