Half a thousand were called to the XX. For the National Syngenta Wine Competition
This year, 501 entries were received for the XX. National Syngenta Wine Competition, in which one wine each from Béres Szőlőbirtok és Pincészet, Attila Maróti, Zsolt Maul Premium Winery and Szentpéteri Wine Cellar was the winner – it was revealed at the award ceremony of the competition on Thursday in Siófok.
After a forced break of two years, the National Syngenta Wine Competition was organized for the twentieth time. Eric Thomas, the plant protection marketing manager of Syngenta’s Danube Region, said at the event that a total of 262 white wines, 166 red wines, 53 rosé wines, 10 champagnes, 8 sparkling wines and two sillers were entered from all wine regions of the country, of which 216 were from the 2022 vintage.
Diána Nyitrainé Sárdy, director of the MATE Institute of Viticulture and Oenology and president of the jury, called the wines of the 2022 vintage promising, which is favorable, since there was a lot of uncertainty in cultivation due to the severe drought. In the case of the fragrant grape varieties – Irsai Olivér, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Muskotály – last year was a particularly good vintage, and the blue grapes also produced quality crops in many places, he added.
He also talked about the fact that in recent decades, winegrowers have introduced many European varieties to Hungary. Syrah is such a newer variety, for example. “As a result of climate changes, the microclimate of the Carpathian Basin is starting to resemble growing conditions in southern Europe more and more, which presents not only opportunities but also challenges for the profession,” he emphasized.
