Potato export market revived

According to KSH data, the potato cultivation area and yield showed a decreasing trend in previous years, but in 2023 5 percent more potatoes (209.9 thousand tons) were produced than a year earlier. According to the publication of the AKI Institute of Agricultural Economics “Information report on autumn agricultural work based on operational reports of October 8, 2024”, the crop was harvested on 91.8 percent of the potato sowing area, 5.82 thousand hectares: the national average yield was 27.2 tons per hectare, and the yield was 158.5 thousand tons.

According to KSH data, the import of table potatoes increased by 2 percent to 24.4 thousand tons between January and August 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. France remained the largest supplier. In the first eight months of this year, new potato imports increased by 12 percent to 11.6 thousand tons compared to the same period of the previous year. 22 percent more, 10.2 thousand tons of new potatoes arrived from France. Exports increased by 62 percent to 4.1 thousand tons in the observed period. The largest target markets were the Czech Republic (+169 percent, 1785.1 tons), Croatia (+53 percent, 1078.9 tons) and Germany (+107 percent, 522.2 tons).

According to AKI PÁIR data, this year’s new potatoes were offered at the Budapest Wholesale Market at a price of 1043 forints/kilogram, similar to the previous year (+1 percent), in the 12th–22nd week of 2024

Following the end of the prime product, the producer price of potatoes decreased by 24 percent to 243 forints/kilogram in the 23rd–45th week of 2024. week compared to the same period of the previous year. French potatoes appeared on the market from week 39 at a price of 255 forints/kilogram, and their wholesale price decreased by 6 percent to 277 forints/kilogram in weeks 42–45 of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year.
