The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) was able to implement its plans for the demonstration plant program and development of its Variety Testing Stations in 2024-2025, within the framework of the European Union’s Agricultural Rural Development Programme’s “Support for Demonstration Plants” application. The aim of the successfully concluded project was to implement the programs and developments, as well as to establish the necessary infrastructure. In addition, Nébih’s experts also fulfilled the goals of knowledge transfer and information. The closing event of the project was held at the Tordas station on September 25.

The project, which has been ongoing for the past two years, has resulted in the modernization of Nébih’s Variety Testing Stations (Tordas, Pölöske, Székkutas) and Variety Production Station (Monorierdő). Thanks to this, it is now possible to conduct plant variety experiments that can reduce the negative effects on agricultural production, while at the same time increasing crop security and resilience. At the four stations, horticultural (vegetables, fruit), field and forestry varieties are tested in field and greenhouse conditions, and varieties suitable for organic farming can also be tested. Furthermore, already recognized varieties can be monitored during variety production.

Thanks to the project, significant infrastructural development has taken place at the stations

With the help of the purchased machines, tools and technology (power plants, frost protection wind machine, flat wall cutter, weed comb, short disc and small seed sowing unit), cost-effective and sustainable farming practices have become available. These can help achieve goals such as reducing the use of pesticides and input materials, precision farming, eliminating weather extremes associated with climate change, and water-retaining soil cultivation. In addition, agricultural actors and producers had the opportunity to learn about the results of variety trials at presentations and professional days held on a variety of topics. The large number of interested participants were able to gain knowledge based on practice-oriented knowledge and experience. Thanks to the knowledge transfer related to the project, farmers were also able to learn about yield-optimizing, innovative and environmental solutions through the use of varieties that can reduce pollutant emissions and help sustainable development. All this supports the efficiency of their production, maintaining and improving their competitiveness. The project closing ceremony held at the end of September 2025 was hosted by the Tordasi station, where Dr. Imre Nemes, President of Nébih, and Dr. Balázs Szabó, Deputy Secretary of State for Agriculture, summarized the results of the project.
