The market for high-protein foods has experienced spectacular growth in recent years – not only internationally, but also in Hungary. The rise of conscious nutrition and the growing number of consumers following an active lifestyle are creating an increasing demand for functional products that offer both enjoyment and nutritional benefits. In response to this trend change, Danone has not only strengthened its presence in the dairy market with its YoPRO brand, but also in the plant segment, introducing protein-rich solutions by expanding the Alpro Plant Protein product line.

Explosive growth in demand in Hungary

Hungarian consumers are making increasingly conscious choices and there is a strong demand for high-protein, value-added products. According to Danone’s experience, this trend is no longer limited to athletes, as the customer base for protein-rich products is quite broad. “It is most popular among health-conscious, active people who pay attention to a balanced diet and who care about maintaining or improving physical performance” – says Karina Gerei, brand manager responsible for the YoPRO brand, who believes that the presence is particularly strong among young adults and middle-aged people.
“Hungarian consumers are clearly open to protein products, which is also confirmed by the growing popularity of YoPRO and Alpro Plant Protein products”
– highlights the expert, adding:
“The category shows stable growth, and the targeted demand of customers and the strengthening of health awareness play an important role in this.”

When protein is part of everyday life

Danone is developing its protein products as part of its “health for all” mission. Its flagship product is YoPRO, which is available in several categories – milk drinks, milk desserts and fermented milk products – on the Hungarian market.
The brand aims to make protein intake not only a privilege for athletes, but also to offer a delicious alternative that can be easily incorporated into everyday nutrition. The products are made with a high protein content, low fat content and no added sugar, which fits well with the needs of Hungarian consumers.
There is a strong strategic consideration behind the development. Danone’s strategic goal is to respond to changing consumer needs, especially the growing demand for conscious lifestyles and functional foods” – says Karina Gerei.

Since protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, high-protein products, which are not only beneficial from a functional point of view, but also offer enjoyment value, play a prominent role in the company’s innovation portfolio.

The plant-based trend is also gaining strength: Alpro Plant Protein

Danone is also a dominant player in the plant-based alternatives market, and with the Alpro brand, it recognized early on that plant-based proteins also provide a serious market opportunity, responding to the high social demands for the products. The Alpro Plant Protein product line portfolio has recently expanded dramatically: in addition to protein-rich plant-based drinks, soy yogurts and desserts have also been added to the shelves.
“We are proud that Alpro was one of the first brands to develop high-protein products on a 100% plant-based basis” –
says Melinda Mizser-Sebők, senior brand manager of the Alpro brand.
“The success of our Plant Protein drinks, plant-based soy yogurts and desserts on the Hungarian market also confirms the growing consumer need and conscious choice.”
Plant protein is an attractive alternative not only for vegan consumers, but also for those who, as followers of a flexitarian diet, reduce the amount of animal products they consume, are lactose intolerant, or simply they want to create a more varied diet.

Trendy growth and communication innovation

In the market for high-protein products, innovation can be observed not only in the number of products, but also in communication solutions.
