Fazekas: GMO dissemination is not the remedy for water shortage
The dissemination of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is not the remedy for water shortage in agriculture – Fazekas Sándor Minister of Agriculture emphasized on Saturday in Berlin at the Global Forum on Food and Agriculture (GFFA). The main theme of the event was sustainable water management.
After the meeting, Fazekas Sándor told MTI that at the meeting he argued that instead of GMO drought-tolerant crops, species that can adapt to climate change and short-term cultured plants should be preferred and the efficient water management should be continued.
Christian Schmidt, German Agriculture and Food Minister stressed that sustainable water management is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century, the responsibility for agriculture is huge because it’s share of global water consumption is 70 percent, and by 2050 had it should provide food to 10 million people.
