The 34th Farmer-Expo International Agricultural and Food Industry Exhibition will be held in Debrecen between August 28-30. This will be the only Hungarian agricultural expo this year where a livestock exhibition will also be held – announced László Vaszkó, the fair director, at a press conference on Wednesday.

The expert reminded that the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic presented Hungarian livestock farming with serious challenges: the first reaction of farmers was fear, isolation, and no one was allowed into their premises. “Now the sector seems to be coming back to life,” the crisis highlighted the importance of cooperation, rapid response and epidemic management protocols – he said, noting that agricultural players have proven that they are able to adapt, defend themselves and learn from the situation. “Farmer-Expo aims to summarize and pass on this experience capital, creating an opportunity for producers, researchers, veterinarians, decision-makers and market participants to jointly evaluate what has happened, present new technologies and lay the foundation for the safe operation of the future,” pointed out László Vaszkó. He added that the goal is not to strengthen fear, but to rebuild self-confidence and demonstrate that Hungarian agriculture is prepared, educated and ready for renewal. Regarding the planned breeding animal show, he noted that live animal shows are important professional elements of the exhibition and arousing public interest year after year.

In cooperation with the Hungarian Animal Breeders’ Association (MÁSZ), the organizers are doing everything they can to ensure that the shows comply with the strictest animal health regulations

The three-day event will feature a rich program: machine demonstrations and technological innovations, professional forums on animal husbandry and crop production, and a drought conference, said László Vaszkó. András Jávor, a professor at the University of Debrecen (DE), who worked for years in the sheep product council, said that the Farmer-Expo could be the venue for the new flag-raising of the sheep sector. The sheep sector has significantly lagged behind other sectors in terms of both infrastructure and innovation, while employing eight thousand sheep farmers and generating a production value of 30 billion forints.
