Frost damage for winegrowers – wines getting more expensive
The winegrowers of the famous wine-region Tokaj-Hegyalja are afraid of frost damages which would naturally lead to a significant growth in prices – a new survey of the Agrareconomics Research Insititute shows. Tokaj-types wines like furmint, hárslevelű are doing fine until minus 17-18 degrees, but under this temperature it is highly possible that frost damage will influence the outcome. The last time this happemed was in 1987, so in the next year 2000 hectars of grapes had to be cut off. According to the president of the Dnube region, minus 15 degrees is the borderline to which grapes are frost-resistant. The type “cserszegi fűszeres” is the most frost-resistant type of grape.
