Actions to be taken after frost damage in the peach plantation
On September 5, the National Food Chain Safety Office and the National Horticulture and Supply Industry Department of the National Chamber of Agriculture held a joint professional presentation entitled “What to do after frost damage in the peach plantation” in Tordas.
The focus of the event was frost damage affecting fruit production – especially stone fruits – and the technological possibilities for its mitigation. Gábor Várszegi, the head of the Nébih Agricultural Genetic Resources Directorate, emphasized in his greeting the importance of sharing the experiences gained during the domestic variety tests and at the shows. After that, dr. Béla Mártonffy, head of the NAK department, highlighted the importance of professional events. Nikoletta Szobonya, meteorologist, presented agrometeorological statistics on the frequency of extreme weather phenomena, the microclimate of plant populations, and the effects of local conditions.
Defense, technology, green pruning
Dr. Árpád Szabó, university associate professor, shared useful information, analyzing specific control options that can be used against the most important pests of peaches. During his presentation, he covered both technological aspects and cost-effectiveness. He was followed by dr. Zsolt Szani, who analyzed the trends in peach variety production and the use of peach varieties in the European Union from the perspective of domestic variety testing experiences. László Komma, horticulture expert, made the professional presentation even more complete by presenting the green pruning of Béla Timon’s peach spindle and explaining the basic principles of the cultivation technology of the frost-damaged peach plantation.
