Ice cream, chips, fast food: many people swear that they will now pay more attention to their diet. At such times, it is easy to be tempted by diets found on the Internet that promise quick success. What is the problem with these diets and how can they achieve long-term effects? Now, with Brigitta Bakk, a dietitian at Flora, we will explore how it is worth embarking on a lifestyle change.
Long-term instead of sprint
Instead of monotonous diets, it is worth choosing one that we can maintain in the long term, as this is how we can achieve lasting change. Usually, we gain excess weight over months or years, but in practice we want to get rid of it immediately, in a few weeks. For example, many people start fasting before traveling, so that they can double up on everything during the vacation, but this can also lead to sudden weight gain – this is called the yo-yo effect. So, in order for the lifestyle change to be effective, instead of dieting like a campaign, we should choose a diet that can actually be integrated into our everyday lives. The Mediterranean diet also owes its popularity to the fact that it contains elements that are recommendable and varied for most people. This diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds and olive oil.
There are many pitfalls
It is also important not to want to change everything immediately, but rather to think in small steps and achievable goals. After choosing a diet, many people make the mistake of following it strictly for a week or two, and then “getting carried away”. Although we can deprive ourselves of the usual tastes and foods in the short term, this no longer works in the longer term.
According to Brigitta Bakk, since traditional Hungarian cuisine is basically high in calories, it is worth transforming these foods into more easily digestible versions, according to our tastes. For example, in the case of lecsó and scrambled eggs, we can replace the fat with vegetable oil with a more beneficial fatty acid composition, and when it comes to sandwiches, we can choose light margarine instead of butter – such as the 100% plant-based Flora Light, the consumption of which can also contribute to maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels.
