These are now the best restaurants in Hungary
The history of restaurant guides provides an interesting insight into how people’s travel and eating habits have changed over time. The first restaurant guides, such as the Michelin Guide, were originally created to make travel destinations easier for motorists. The Michelin brothers, the inventors of the removable tire, created the travel guide as a marketing ploy, which helped motorists with a map and restaurant recommendations. The goal was to encourage people to drive and thus to consume tires.
The Michelin Guide quickly grew in popularity and the publication’s focus shifted increasingly to restaurants. The restaurants were rated with stars, which is still one of the best-known evaluation systems in the gastronomic world. In the beginning, the number of stars was limited, the really excellent places received this recognition.
In Hungary, the Dining Guide plays the role of the Michelin Guide. Since 2005, it has been evaluating and awarding the best of the Hungarian gastronomic scene. The publication ranks not only restaurants, but also patisseries, bars and hotels, and awards awards in several categories. In 2024, another edition of the Dining Guide was published, which lists more than 100 restaurants, as well as additional recommendations that did not make the TOP100 list.
The Dining Guide not only offers lists, but also helps travelers with maps that indicate recommended restaurants. This practical help is especially important nowadays, when people are often looking for gastronomic experiences both domestically and internationally.
Restaurant guides are constantly evolving to meet the needs of modern travelers and foodies. The examples of the Michelin Guide and the Dining Guide show how important these publications are in the world of tourism and gastronomy. Restaurant guides not only provide travel destinations, but also contribute to the support of local economies by highlighting excellent restaurants.
