These destinations were popular among Hungarians this summer
Italian cities are becoming more and more popular among Hungarians: this summer, 60% more flight tickets to Bari and 40% more to Naples and Milan were sold than last year, according to the Világgazdaság report. In addition to flights to Italy, other European destinations also showed growth, but Paris stood out, where three times as many Hungarians traveled to the city during the Olympics than before. On the other hand, there was a decline in Amsterdam, London, Cyprus and Portugal, where fewer tickets were sold.
In addition to the interest in Italian destinations, Greece and Spain were also popular among Hungarians: the number of tickets sold to Rhodes and Zakynthos doubled, while more than twice as many Hungarians traveled to Spain, such as Alicante, compared to last year. Turkey also remained popular, particularly Istanbul and coastal resorts such as Antalya and Izmir.
Although many people predicted a drastic increase in the price of plane tickets, this did not happen: tickets went up by an average of 10-15% this year, which is still below the inflation rate. The price of the average round-trip tickets is around HUF 80-100 thousand, and beyond that, we can hardly speak of a mass market. During the Olympic period, ticket prices to Paris rose minimally, from HUF 110,000 to HUF 117,000.
Demand for Asian destinations also increased: traffic to Chinese cities with direct flights increased fivefold, while tickets to Japan tripled. Although the growth started from low base numbers for these destinations, the trend shows a significant change.
Passengers were not afraid of the price increase this year, and most of the flight ticket bookings were left to the last minute. The majority of travelers have taken out insurance for possible flight delays and cancellations, as these have become more and more frequent in the recent period.
