During the summer, the population and experts dealing with soil protection could express their views on the condition of Hungarian soils, soil protection issues and the National Soil Database in the Nébih questionnaire. The objective of the survey was to examine soil-related knowledge and interests. More than 400 answers were received to Nébih’s questions. During the evaluation of the answers, topics that have not come to the fore until now also emerged. Thus, the areas that are the focus of interest could be clearly identified.

Those who completed the questionnaire were most interested in the following areas:

  • Introducing the nature of the soil as a living environment.
  • What does soil protection mean? • Preservation of humus content and the importance of avoiding soil erosion
  • Soil functions and their protection
  • Description of nutrient supply methods and their implications
  • Soil protection practices for home gardens: no rotation, mulching, use of compost
  • Environmental effects of nutrient use.

Using data collected with the help of the National Soil Database, the authority prepares authentic information for the population

Based on the feedback, soil protection specialists will also regularly use the data. According to the hope of the office, the population’s positive and understanding attitude towards agriculture and soil protection activities will continue to increase. 98% of the respondents consider it important to protect Hungary’s soils, and 100% of them feel it is necessary to make them more familiar with soil protection issues. Those filling out the questionnaire uniformly know the main functions of agricultural soils, but they are less informed about the processes related to sustainable food production.
