It is now the most expensive cheese in the world, costing the price of a car
At an auction, the restaurant paid 30,000 euros for a 2.2-kilogram Spanish Cabrales cheese, which reached a price never seen before in the world. The event took place after a cheese competition where Cabrales cheese was chosen as the best. The cheese spent ten months maturing in a high-altitude cave before being auctioned.
Cabrales cheese is made by hand from raw cow’s, sheep’s or goat’s milk and then aged for many months in the natural caves of the Picos de Europa. The humidity there promotes the development of penicillin-like mold, which gives the cheese its unique taste and color.
The winner of the cheese competition went to Guillermo Pendás Bada, the maker of the cheese, who said that they knew they had good cheese, but were not sure of winning. Cabrales cheese set a record for its price and became one of the most expensive cheeses in the world.
This record price also draws attention to the fact that in our neighboring country, Hungary, expensive cheeses are also made, for example, from donkey milk. Donkey milk is used, among other things, as a raw material for cosmetics, formulas and medicines. Although the price of donkey milk is HUF 2,000-3,000 per liter and it is mainly bought for children, its consumption is not expected to spread.
