Tesco, Britain’s biggest retailer, is planning a new front in its international expansion by opening a first Tesco Express convenience store in China. The move next month is expected to herald the roll-out of the small store format across the country, one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The first Tesco Express will be opened in Shanghai through a joint venture with Tin Cao, with which the supermarket giant already runs more than 50 Hymall-branded hypermarkets. Tesco opened its first Tesco-branded store in China in Beijing a year ago. Carrefour, the French supermarket chain, runs 300 discount stores in China.
