Exotic meat market in Hungary: we also sell kangaroo meat and crocodile tail
In Hungary, interest in exotic meats is on the rise, available at high prices and under special conditions. With the barbecue season approaching, it’s useful to explore the options for purchasing such types of meat. According to a recent analysis by Pénzcentrum, delicacies like kangaroo, zebra, camel, llama, and crocodile meats require significant preparation for purchase as they are rarely available in conventional grocery store meat counters.
The investigation reveals that crocodile tail is priced at 27,000 HUF per kilogram, bison burgers cost 13,000 HUF each, kangaroo steaks approximately 6,000 HUF, and emu meat ranges from 2,500 to 6,000 HUF per kilogram. In gourmet online stores, frozen herb butter snails cost 52,000 HUF per kilogram, and a package of frog legs is available for 6,000 HUF.
Ákos Taferner, Metro’s marketing manager, emphasized that they only sell products that comply with all Hungarian and EU regulations, and the company’s quality assurance standards are even stricter. Suppliers must undergo a rigorous audit before they can enter the international market. The market for exotic meats in Hungary is still developing, but consumer demand is continuously growing, particularly in high-end gastronomy.
