SPAR reduces the use of plastic film by more than 59 tons annually
SPAR saves a significant amount of plastic film on an annual basis by covering part of the deliveries to the stores with rolli-tarpaulin, which is used repeatedly during the logistics processes.
By the end of December 2022, SPAR has started using more than 35,000 rolli tarpaulins. In the logistics chain, the products are sent from the warehouse to the stores, they are first placed on trolleys and then secured. The latter process has been carried out with foil until now, but from now on rolli-tarpaulins are used wherever possible. The tarpaulin-covered trolleys are transported from the warehouse to the stores by truck, then the empty transport equipment and the collected tarpaulins are returned to the warehouse, and they can be used again for the next delivery.
“Environmentally conscious operation is one of the cornerstones of our business philosophy, which is why we pay particular attention to reducing negative environmental impacts to a minimum. The use of the rolli tarpaulin also supports the group-level objectives of significantly reducing waste production by 2030 through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. In the selection of secondary raw materials – paper, plastic – generated and sold in stores, the initial recycling rate of 46 percent has now increased to more than 70 percent in our stores. Of course, the best packaging waste is that which is not created in the first place. In the case of the rolli tarpaulin, this is exactly what we are talking about: we replace a significant amount of plastic film, and instead we prefer an environmentally friendly solution.”
– said Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.
According to calculations, SPAR saves at least 59 tons of plastic packaging material per year with the innovation, reducing the environmental burden.
