The latest survey of the Hungarian Association of Logistics Service Centers (MLSZKSZ) on the packaging habits of the logistics market shows that sustainable packaging solutions are gaining an increasingly prominent role in the domestic logistics sector. According to the findings of the association, companies are increasingly striving to reduce plastic use and to apply cost-effective, environmentally friendly packaging technologies. The market trend is also strengthened by the tightening regulatory environment and the increasing sustainability expectations of business partners, which may further accelerate the transition in the coming years.

According to the survey of the Hungarian Association of Logistics Service Centers on the packaging habits of the logistics market, more and more companies in the domestic logistics sector are taking concrete steps to reduce the use of plastic packaging. From the food industry to beverage production and pharmaceuticals to warehousing, more than 1,200 Hungarian companies are already using modern solutions, such as EcoFoil foil, which reduces the amount of industrial plastic waste by more than 600 tons per year. This is not only a significant environmental result, but also means annual cost savings of around 1 billion forints for users, complemented by a further 131 million forints in EPR fee reduction.

Packaging film use can be reduced by up to a third

The survey also records specific examples of the tangible benefits of environmentally friendly packaging solutions. For example, a domestic food company was able to halve the amount of packaging film used per pallet in the spring of 2024: instead of 250 grams, only 125 grams were needed on average. The result: 4.5 tons less plastic waste per year and a saving of about 900 thousand forints in packaging costs – all without compromising transport safety.

A similar trend is shown by the experience of a dairy company, where the efficiency of manual packaging has increased more than threefold. Previously, a 2-kilogram film roll was sufficient to package an average of 7 pallets, but with the new technology, they were able to safely package 23 pallets from the same amount. Thanks to this, the company only needed 100 rolls of film instead of the previous 300 per month, which meant an annual material cost saving of more than 1.5 million forints.

“Sustainable packaging in logistics is not only an environmental requirement, but also a competitiveness factor. New technologies such as environmentally friendly stretch film are good examples of how plastic use can be reduced without compromising transport safety.”

– emphasized Ajtony Bíró Koppány, Secretary General of the Hungarian Confederation of Logistics and Transport.

The meeting of environmental awareness and economy

Experience clearly shows that sustainability and economy are not mutually exclusive concepts. According to the Hungarian Confederation of Logistics and Transport, players in the logistics sector are increasingly recognizing that less plastic use not only protects the environment, but also strengthens competitiveness by reducing costs. The impact of the modern packaging technologies used goes beyond the direct saving of plastic waste: less raw material transportation, fewer energy-intensive production processes and lower storage requirements are required, which further reduces the entire ecological footprint of the logistics chain.
