About 8,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Hungary every year
Breast cancer is still one of the leading types of cancer among the adult female population, and the disease affects an increasingly younger age group as well – pointed out the experts at the round table discussion organized by Lilly Hungária Kft., related to the month of the fight against breast cancer. Malignant lesions can be diagnosed early with proper self-examination education and regular, accessible screening tests, thereby significantly increasing the chance of recovery. However, the specialists of the Hungarian Senological Society and the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology of Semmelweis University also highlighted: in 10-15% of cases there is a high risk of breast cancer recurring within 2-5 years, therefore it is essential that those affected have access to all possible for a treatment option.
Every year, October is the month of the fight against breast cancer, the purpose of which is to draw attention to the importance of prevention and early detection. In Hungary, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women, although it is important to mention that it can also occur among men. At the round table discussion organized by Lilly Hungária Kft., the invited medical experts emphasized that education about prevention and symptoms is crucial, as misconceptions about the lesion, such as that the use of certain deodorants or the wearing of too-tight bras increase the risk, still persist factors.
The disease is affecting younger and younger people, and environmental risks are increasing
Some type of breast tumor is identified in approximately 8,000 patients in Hungary every year, and although the chance of developing the lesion increases significantly with age, the disease affects an increasingly younger age group. Traditionally, risk factors include breast cancer in first- and second-degree relatives, hereditary genetic mutations, and the long-term use of hormone-containing preparations, but at the same time, environmental and civilizational risks such as postponing childbearing, as well as unhealthy lifestyles, especially obesity and excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to the appearance of breast cancer.
“It is important to be aware – especially if you belong to a group at risk due to any of the above reasons – of the symptoms and signs, in the case of which it is really worth contacting a specialist. These include nipple discharge, inversion, or clear changes in shape, as well as unevenness, redness, rashes, or peeling areas of the breast skin. It is also worth paying attention to pain in the breast or armpit, which is not related to the menstrual cycle and the usual symptoms experienced before and after it.
– Dr. László Landherr, president of the Hungarian Senological Society, drew attention to the important information.
